Dua for Wearing Garments ! دعاء
The dua for wearing a garment was taught by Prophet Muhammadﷺ and has been reported by the most authentic ahadith records from multiple sources. One narrator of this dua is Ali Ibn Abi Talib ؓ , and it is reported in Musnad Ahmad (1355) that Abu Matar said that he witnessed Ali ؓ recite this dua after putting on a new chemise. The same has been reported in Mishkat al-Masabih 4373.
The second narrator of this dua is Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ . It is reported in Sunan Ibn Majah (3557) that Abu Umamah ؓ said that Umar bin Khattab ؓ put on a garment and recited the dua mentioned above. The same has been reported in Mishkat al-Masabih 4374. The third narrator of this dua is Mu'adh ibn Anas. Abu Dawud al-Sijistani wrote in Sunan Abi Dawud (4023) that Mu'adh ibn Anas ؓ reported that he heard this dua for wearing a new garment from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee kasaanee haathaa (aththawba) wa razaqaneehi min ghayri hawlim-minnee wa laa quwwatin.
Praise is to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, though I was powerless myself and incapable
[Hisnul 5] [Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, At-Tirmizi, 'Irwa'ul-Ghalil 7/47.]
Reciting dua before a new garment has multiple benefits, the foremost of which is gratitude to Allah. Material objects, like clothes, have a way of enticing humans. If we are not careful, we can become participants in a rat race in quest of worldly possessions. Reciting Allah's name when wearing clothes reminds us to be thankful to Allah, who enabled us to be able to purchase clothes to protect us from the seasons and cover our awrah. It reminds us of Allah's warning against love for material things and makes us more conscious of the things we purchase.
It also increases our empathy towards those who are less fortunate. A common saying condoned in Islam is to donate one of your old pieces of clothing when you purchase a new one. So when you recite dua, you are reminded to help others. Finally, reciting dua before wearing a new garment is for Barakah; you ask Allah to make it so that you wear these clothes in good times, and may they serve you well.
